Protecting Yourself against Internet Scams

How many of us could say we don’t use the internet on a daily basis? Try asking someone the last time they had a web-less day.  Chances are you won’t find many considering the web is everywhere, from home entertainment systems, work functionality and, the most present one, our smartphones. Sure, it helps to get more done, but it also increases the chances of anyone becoming a victim of internet scams.

As many of us use the web for our daily tasks, personal curiosities and the like, as with everything else, there are people who utilize the internet for their own agenda, targeting vulnerable people.  Their intentions are usually to retrieve not only personal information, but also attempt to weasel unsuspecting people into giving them their financial information.  And these online scammers are by no means amateurs.

Many times the target will receive an email that is seemingly from their financial institution.  Letterheads and logos are easily put into these emails to give the idea of an official statement, usually warning the recipient of the status of their account, or even stating that by not responding, their bank account(s) will be terminated.  A link is then provided in the email for the target to sign in to their account.  This is where you have to be diligent.  Many scammers will produce a simple website that looks strikingly similar to the bank’s actual website, prompting you to enter your login or account information.  By filling out and submitting this you are putting your identity and financial assets at risk of being defrauded.

If you do find yourself at the receiving end of one of these emails, it’s safe to ignore it, but to help prevent others from becoming victims, you could always report them to the respective bank’s fraud team.  All major Canadian banks will have a phone and email contact to report such activity.

The holidays is no exception for scammers. To read more about how scammers target individuals around the holidays, read more at www.ChorasForum.com!
