Who is Daniel Caesar?

Some have compared him to the likes of The Weeknd, a more ‘refined’ Frank Ocean even.  Hailing from Toronto, Daniel Caesar brings the soulful, bluesy sounds of these two chart-topping artists but, coming from a musically involved family (his father was a gospel singer) his voice is reminiscent of ballads from another time.

Caesar’s interest in music began to really take over while he was in high school.  Not being the cookie-cutter student, he had been kicked out at grade 11 and it was during his year of homeschooling that he finally dipped his toes into the industry.  Jordon Manswell had met Daniel at this point and coming from a local suburb as well gave him hope that he could make it big.  After graduation he had taken the biggest risk yet, leaving a religious home for the grunge of downtown Toronto.  It wasn’t easy for the young artist to take to the music industry with everything he had, until he had almost nothing at all but the clothes on his back and a heart that beat to his own rhythm.  He knew he had to dive in and that’s what he did.

He began working odd jobs to make enough to get by, and using all of his spare time recording.  It was at this point that he began recording tracks in a living room that eventually amounted to his second EP, Praise Break.  Growing up in a religious household, Daniel had questions about everything, not wanting to embrace the church before finding out his answers that he needed, the EP focused on religion and love.

Toronto’s music scene is blowing up now more than ever and Daniel Caesar is the latest to really make an impression.  We’ve all heard the “new Toronto’ sound that reminds you of those nights you haven’t slept before the sun rises again, but Daniel’s sound is much more refined, mature and soulful.  He has skipped the filler, the glorified lifestyle and the trending to what he knows and what he is truly talented for. His sound has imprints of his faithful upbringing, tagging his father a huge inspiration of the sound of his music.  His other inspirations include Casablanca’s Humphrey Bogart and Pink Floyd.

Daniel has also worked with some big producers of Toronto including Jordan Evans and Matthew Burnett, both of whom have also worked with the likes of Drake and PartyNextDoor.

It is without a doubt that Daniel Caesar is leaving his mark on the Toronto music scene, already selling out a show this past April at the iconic Mod Club (For those of you who don’t remember, that’s where The Weeknd had begun his road to stardom as well.)

Daniel Caesar is scheduled to perform this week at NXNE’s main stage venue at Port Lands on June 17.  You won’t want to miss this young performer live!
